The Cooking & Wellness for Independence (summer) program is an intensive four day educational training program for youth between 15 and 26 years of age. This program is specifically for youth who are interested in developing culinary skills, improving their physical, mental and emotional health. In a structured learning environment youth will participate in a variety of activities which hope to promote independence and wellbeing.
Youth will spend 2 half days working in a commercial size kitchen, receiving instruction from an experienced chef who will teach them basic cooking skills and how to work safely in a kitchen. Youth will also learn a variety of ways to make economical and healthy meals that fit their budget and build their confidence in the kitchen. One morning will be devoted to touring markets, learning how to select healthy foods with the afternoon devoted to creating healthy budget friendly meals with the assistance of staff. Over the four days youth will also participate in several educational workshops to promote physical, mental and emotional health. They will receive instruction from a Nutritionist, yoga practitioner, self-defence trainer, Sexual Health Promoter; earn a food handling certificate and hours towards their high school volunteer requirement.
Participants will receive breakfast, snacks and a lunch which they will prepare with the chef and volunteers. Participants will also receive a yoga mat, water bottle and budget friendly healthy cookbook as a wellness gift.
